Carton Dental Fees

At Carton Dental we would like patients to know exactly what the cost of attending for an examination will be before they come in to see us. For this reason we have decided that the cost of an examination includes all small X-rays that may be needed.

Two small X-rays are normally taken for new patients to check for decay between the teeth in areas where the dentist can not easily see. Further small X-rays would be taken for any teeth that are giving pain, require extraction or root canal, or if we wish to check for problems on the root of a tooth.

We would like patients to be aware that many other clinics charge separately for these X-rays (often 10-20 Euro each) and so although their examination fee may seem low, whenever you factor in the cost X-rays the overall cost is significantly higher.

After an initial examination a patient can receive a written estimate/ quotation for the costs of any work that may be required. A Written Report has a separate fee.

This fee covers the assessment of a patient’s specific problem. It includes any small X-rays that may be needed and any prescription that may be needed.

We do not except PRSI for this visit.

It is not a full examination of all the entire mouth. Patients will need to return for a full examination if that is what they require/ would like.

It does not include a Written Report.

An OPG is a large X-ray which shows all the teeth in the upper and lower jaws on one image. We would commonly take an OPG to

• assess the position of wisdom teeth
• assess the damage to bone levels caused by gum disease

Other reasons to take an OPG would be to

• investigate oral infections and abscesses
• detect oral fractures
• investigate dislocated jaws & other jaw issues
• detect tumours, cysts and other disorders
• detect abnormal tooth development
• dental implant planning

Like every piece of equipment in our practice, our X-ray equipment was bought brand-new and is the best that money can buy. It produces images of the highest quality available.

A Written Report is document produced for a patient after they have attended for an examination. In the report the dentist explains what their findings during the examination were, explains what the patient may require in terms of treatment, the pros and cons of each treatment option, costs and risks involved, predictions for the future, general advice.

Patients should expect to wait up to 14 days after their initial examination for their dentist to compile a Written Report. The cost of a written Report is 100-200 Euro depending on the amount of time required.

A scale and polish normally lasts 15-20 minutes when carried out by a dentist/hygienist with a dental nurse assisting.

Occasionally a patient will require further cleaning at a subsequent appointment. There is obviously a charge for this additional cleaning. This very rarely happens. It is not always possible for us to predict how long a patient is going to need their teeth cleaned for without having seen them first.

A patient may wish to be “numbed up” with local anaesthetic to have a scale and polish if they have very sensitive teeth.

If a patient wishes to be “numbed up” with local anaesthetic to have a scale and polish there is a fee to cover the extra time and materials required for the injections.

If the Scale and Polish is being carried out under the PRSI scheme then the additional cost would normally be 58 Euro but may be less depending on how much of the mouth needs to be numbed.

Poor quality filling materials lead to poor quality treatment outcomes.

Using the best quality filling materials gives a dentist the chance to provide the best quality results in terms of fillings that look natural and stand the test of time.

For teeth at the front of the mouth we use the following composite brands:

• Venus Pearl
• IPS Empress Direct
• Enamel Plus HFO

For teeth at the back of the mouth we use:
Admira Fusion, Majesty Flow, AP-X, EverX Flow, EverX posterior.
We use Clearfil SE Protect and Optibond FL.
That may not mean much to most people but it is part of the reason we treat so many dentists as patients.

The average cost of fillings on back teeth is 150-180 Euro.

Biodentine is a material we use in an attempt to avoid root canal treatment when a patient has very deep decay close to the nerve. We use it in cases where we think that if we just fill the tooth, it will soon die off. Delaying the death of a tooth helps to delay the extraction of that tooth.

A temporary filling may be placed to protect a tooth until there is an opportunity to place a definitive permanent filling.

A temporary filling may sometimes be placed whenever after removing all the decay from the tooth there is too much bleeding to place a definitive permanent filling. The placement of a temporary filling in this case gives the gum a chance to heal and increases the likelihood of the permanent filling being successful. This very rarely happens.

Temporary fillings can be very unpredictable in nature as the teeth that require them are often very compromised. We guarantee all temporary fillings for 4 weeks. That doesn’t mean we expect every temporary filling to last more than 4 weeks, it means that if your temporary filling comes out within 4 weeks we will replace it free of charge if that is possible. Normally when a temporary filling comes out after a short period of time it is because the tooth has broken due to being too weak to hold a filling.

The cost of a crown will vary depending on the choice of material used and the aesthetics required.

A zirconia crown (strong white crown) on a back tooth is 750 Euro. Crowns on teeth where aesthetics are very important start at 800 Euro and crowns containing gold are 900-950 Euro depending on the % gold content requested.

The amount of time that is required to put a crown / onlay / veneer / bridge back in can vary greatly depending on the condition of the remaining tooth and the type of cement used.

If enough care is not taken when cementing a restoration you can expect it to come out again prematurely or worse still you can expect decay to develop on the remaining tooth structure. The fee of 120-180 Euro does not include a replacement post should one be required.

We have set opening hours that are better than any other practice around. Our nursing staff are contracted to work set hours.

Our nursing staff however will often work beyond these hours if it is unexpectedly needed in order to provide the best possible care for our patients.

We can only see so many patients in a day. Only one patient can sit in the dental chair at a time.

Our nursing staff and dentists have lives outside of work and families to get home to in the evening.

Should you need to see a dentist and there are no available time slots that day then you can request an Out Of Hours Appointment. If it suits a nurse and a dentist to rearrange their schedules to see you that day, then an appointment may be offered.

Some patients will be so nervous about attending a dentist for the first time that they may wish to attend for a consultation to talk with a dentist but not undergo an examination at that first visit. A non-clinical consultation normally lasts 30 minutes.

We would ask all patients to be familiar with our Waiting Policy. If you don’t want to take the chance that you may have to wait when you attend for your appointment, that can be arranged.
